China becomes a full member of the Generation IV International Forum

China has officially become a full member of the Generation IV International Forum (GIF).

The official instrument of accession of the People's Republic of China was received by the Secretary-General of the OECD, Depositary of the Framework Agreement for International Collaboration on Research and Development of Generation IV Nuclear Energy Systems. The announcement of the completion by China of its internal process to accede to the Framework Agreement was made on November 29th 2007, during the 22nd meeting of the GIF Policy Group, which was held in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea.

China designated the China Atomic Energy Authority and the Ministry of Science and Technology as its Implementing Agents of this Agreement which will enter into force for China 90 days after the deposit of its instrument of accession.

This accession, which follows the signature in November 2006 by Chinese officials of the GIF Charter, formalizes China's participation to the GIF, and signifies its commitment to take an active part in the Forum's Research and Development projects.

With China's accession to the GIF, most major countries developing nuclear power as one of the means to meet their increasing energy needs now cooperate within the GIF framework on the most promising nuclear energy technologies, for the benefit of sustainable development.

The Generation IV initiative was launched in 2000 to provide a means of discussing the future of nuclear technology. Currently eight Members are Parties to its Framework Agreement (Canada, China, France, Japan, Republic of Korea, Switzerland, the United States and the European Atomic Energy Community) and five additional Members have not yet acceded to or ratified this Agreement (Argentina, Brazil, Russian Federation, Republic of South Africa, and the United Kingdom). GIF Members cooperate on the development of the new generation of nuclear systems capable of fulfilling specific criteria: efficient use of natural resources, minimised production of waste, enhanced proliferation resistance and physical protection, improved safety and reliability, lower generation costs over other energy sources and financial risk level comparable to other energy projects.
