Scientific focus: Generation IV International Forum (GIF) Advanced Nuclear Energy Systems
Format: All participants are initially required to submit one-page executive summary of their research to be reviewed by a panel of experts. Up to 30 outstanding research projects that are original, significant, and relevant for GIF will be selected and their author will be invited to record a 4-minute video pitch between 15 February and 15 March 2023. The recorded videos will be publicly posted (e.g., YouTube) for 30 days to allow world-wide viewing and voting. The public viewing of the pitches will begin in April 2023. A GIF expert panel (GIF Jury) will also judge the video pitches based on their creativity, communication effectiveness, and technical quality. The best pitches will be selected based on (1) the GIF Jury and (2) the popular voting.
Prizes: Winners will be selected in both the popular vote category and the GIF Jury category. Winners will be announced in May 2023.
• GIF Jury Category
The first-place winner will be:
(1) invited to present a webinar in 2023 or 2024 as part of the GIF Education and Training Working Group Webinar series, and
(2) invited to attend a GIF event planned in 2024 (travel expenses will be reimbursed on the OECD NEA basis).
The second-place winner will be:
(1) invited to present a GIF webinar in 2023 or 2024, and
(2) invited to attend a future GIF meeting in their region.
• The Popular Vote Category
The winner - Audience Favorite - will be invited to present a GIF webinar in 2023 or 2024.
Who can enter: The 2023 Pitch your Gen IV Research Competition is open to a) currently enrolled PhD students and b) Post-Doctoral fellows and junior researchers who defended their Ph.D. after January 1, 2021. Your research must be related to GIF Advanced Nuclear Energy Systems and could be either an independent research project or one working with a research mentor.
Executive Summary submission: the executive summary should briefly describe the impact of the project in advancing GIF nuclear energy systems and the main achievements. If the project is the outcome of a group effort, participants should make sure to highlight their individual contributions. The executive summary is limited to 750 words and the language is English. One Figure or Table may be used but counts for 250 words. The executive summary template can be found here. Include in the executive summary your name, university/organization, your expected or actual PhD completion date, the name of your research supervisor, and a publication by the author (if available). Participants should assume that the executive summary is a public document and it is their responsibility to obtain all necessary authorizations to distribute the document.
Video recording: up to 30 finalists will be invited to record a four-minute video pitch of their project. Visual support during the pitch is limited to 3 slides: (1) GIF Cover Slide, (2) Title, Author, and Affiliation Slide, and (3) Author’s choice. A template and further instructions for submittal of the video will be provided to the finalists.
