For over twenty years, the Generation IV International Forum (GIF) has supported global cooperative initiatives to develop advanced nuclear energy systems addressing future global energy requirements. The objectives set for Generation IV designs encompass enhanced fuel efficiency, minimized waste generation, economic competitiveness, and adherence to rigorous safety and proliferation resistance measures. 

Initially, GIF conducted a comprehensive review of reactor technologies, eventually focusing on six promising technologies. 

The GIF SIAP charter is to provide advice on long-term strategic issues, including regulatory, commercial or technical issues. It advises GIF on priorities, schedules, “market pull” opportunities and implementation possibilities.

The Education and Training Working Group (ETWG) was initially established as a GIF task force in November 2015 and elevated to a GIF working group in 2019. 

The main goal of the ETWG is to provide a platform enhancing open education and training in all topics related to Advanced Nuclear Reactor and Fuel Cycle technologies and associated GIF efforts. The ETWG also aims at facilitating communication and networking of individuals and organisations supporting GIF activities in sharing and preserving Generation IV related knowledge.

Since its inception in 2001 the Generation IV has been coordinating and implementing a broad range of activities aimed at fostering international cooperation to advance the development and deployment of Generation IV Nuclear Energy Systems. The core of GIF activities is carried out by its System Steering Committees and its Working Groups and Task Forces. 

The main focus of GIF was defined in the GIF Charter:

The GIF is led by the Policy Group (PG), the highest-level Committee of the GIF responsible for governing its overall framework and policies, for the overall steering of GIF co-operative efforts and for interactions with third parties. As of 2024, the GIF Policy Group is led by the GIF Chair, with support from 4 Vice Chairs, a Policy Director and a Technical Director.
