GIF carries out its mission through its Generation IV technology specific System Steering Committees and works on cross cutting and methodological matters through its Working Groups and Task Forces.
Get an overview of how Gen IV Nuclear Energy Systems are defined, what are the Generation IV criteria, which Nuclear Reactors Technologies were selected as capable of meeting those criteria and how this relates to the GIF Technology Roadmap (and its revisions).
Generation IV International Forum (GIF) was created as a co-operative international endeavour seeking to develop the research necessary to test the feasibility and performance of fourth generation nuclear systems, and to make them available for industrial deployment by 2030. The GIF Risk and Safety Working Group (RSWG) facilitates collaboration among member countries to share expertise, methodologies, and best practices in risk and safety assessments for Generation-IV reactors. It also works towards the development of international safety criteria, guidance and methodologies for Generation-IV nuclear reactors, providing designers of Generation IV systems with concepts and methods that can help guide their R&D activities in a way that promotes a strong safety basis and efficient licensing of advanced nuclear technologies.
The Education and Training Working Group (ETWG) was initially established as a GIF task force in November 2015 and elevated to a GIF working group in 2019.
The main goal of the ETWG is to provide a platform enhancing open education and training in all topics related to Advanced Nuclear Reactor and Fuel Cycle technologies and associated GIF efforts. The ETWG also aims at facilitating communication and networking of individuals and organisations supporting GIF activities in sharing and preserving Generation IV related knowledge.
The work of GIF on each of the six Gen-IV systems is governed by Systems Arrangements (SAs) or Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) that establish respectively System Steering Committees (SSCs) and provisional SSCs (pSSCs).
The SSCs report directly to the GIF Policy Group (PG), are in close communication with the Experts Group (EG) and are supported by the GIF Technical Secretariat (TS). They also provide input and can require support from Methodology Working Groups that look into cross cutting topics. Each SSC oversees several projects.
