  • About GIF

Generation IV International Forum (GIF) was created as a co-operative international endeavour seeking to develop the research necessary to test the feasibility and performance of fourth generation nuclear systems, and to make them available for industrial deployment by 2030. Learn more about its governing agreements and structure here.

Cross-cutting Working Groups

Recognizing that core topics such as safety, economics, and non-proliferation, along with the challenges to be addressed for the deployment of Generation IV Nuclear Energy Systems, are shared across all six Gen IV Systems, GIF has established cross-cutting Methodology Working Groups (WG). These WGs report to the GIF Experts Groups (EG), solicit inputs, provide support to System Steering Committees, and receive backing from the GIF Technical Secretariat (TS).

Currently, GIF maintains six WGs.

Non-Electric and Cogeneration Applications of Nuclear Energy Working Group

The “Non-Electric and Cogeneration Applications of Nuclear Energy” Working Group (NECA WG) was formed in 2024 to advance knowledge and access to energy system design, analysis, and optimisation tools that may allow decision makers to find optimal energy system solutions for different socio-economic and geographical contexts. This working group builds upon the work carried by the concluded GIF Non-Electric Applications of Nuclear Heat (NEANH TF, 2021-2024).

System Steering Committees

The work of GIF on each of the six Gen-IV systems is governed by Systems Arrangements (SAs) or Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) that establish respectively System Steering Committees (SSCs) and provisional SSCs (pSSCs).

The SSCs report directly to the GIF Policy Group (PG), are in close communication with the Experts Group (EG) and are supported by the GIF Technical Secretariat (TS). They also provide input and can require support from Methodology Working Groups that look into cross cutting topics. Each SSC oversees several projects.
